University Racing Eindhoven
WHO WE ARE
University Racing Eindhoven is the largest and longest-running student team of Eindhoven University of Technology. URE consists of 83 talented students, mostly coming from the faculties of Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering and Electrical Engineering. But almost all studies from the TU/e are represented within the team. In recent years we even started expanding and working together with other educational institutions in and around Eindhoven. The team is complemented by interns from universities of applied sciences, and several exchange students. The goal of the multidisciplinary team is to design, build, test, and race an electric and autonomous race car in just one year.
During the summer, the team competes in the international Formula Student competition, the biggest and most prestigious engineering design competition in the world. During these events, the car and team are tested on design, quality, and knowledge about the car. The students learn to work in a large team, and to put theory from their studies into practice. They are brought together by a passion for technology, which results in a faster, more efficient, and more reliable car every year.
After the success of previous cars, URE is building the next evolution of the modular car. This means that the car can autonomously read, react and learn from the race track provided. Just with a flip of a switch it can still be driven manually again. This is interesting for industry, both directly and indirectly. Directly by URE being able to give feedback on industry’s products that we use in and on our vehicle, and indirectly by delivering very experienced students in the area of machine learning and control systems, who will benefit the growing smart-mobility industry after graduating. This brings more safety, sustainability, and efficiency to mobility in the long run. A more detailed description of the modular concept is given further on.
ELECTRIC
URE has always pushed the boundaries of innovation. The team built the first electric race car of the Benelux, and already four years ago the team once again overcame the limitations of technology by creating the first autonomous race car of the Benelux.
Four years ago, URE started focusing on the latest major innovation in the automotive sector: autonomous driving technology. By converting a former race car, the 2015/2016 URE11, URE built the first autonomous race car of the Benelux, the URE11D. This was only the first step of the next major accomplishment of URE.
After successful testing and fine-tuning of the URE11D, the autonomous system was transferred to the new URE14, forming the URE14D/E. As a result, the first modular autonomous race car, the URE14D/E finished in the top 5 of every race it competed in, electric and driverless.
During the 2020-2022 racing seasons, we built further on the URE14 concept, a project that would become a game-changer in the Formula Student world. A race car that could compete in both the electric and driverless competition of Formula Student. With complete focus on the objective, URE designed the next generation of its iconic race car, the URE15.
While the URE14 and the URE15 still took a couple of hours to convert from manual operation to a driverless vehicle, the URE16 became the first car to do that in a matter of seconds. Designing the car around the ’’flip of a switch’’ concept allowed the car to compete both in the EV class as well as the DV class in the same competition. The URE17 continued with this concept and made some improvements on the design
DRIVERLESS
With the URE20, URE wants to compete in three Formula Student races as usual, but achieve at least 750 out of 1000 points in each. To do this, we will be taking most of the URE19 concept as a basis, but with a significant focus on testing and validation. Making sure we have ample time to rigorously test and validate each and every subsystem of the car, as well as being able to tune the car’s performance to the absolute maximum.
We want to attend multiple events each season and score as many points as possible. To be able to do that we need a reliable car which we can trust to perform. This is why we are maintaining a strict deadline of finishing the car by the first of April, allowing for 3 months of intense and thorough testing.
WHY IT MATTERS
The need for engineers is steadily increasing, particularly in the Brainport region centered around Eindhoven. In this dynamic area, skilled engineers have plenty of job opportunities to consider. However, a significant challenge persists: there is an insufficient supply of high-caliber engineers to meet the increasing demands of companies.
Picture the advantage of establishing direct connections with a select group of the finest and most motivated engineers. These professionals bring real-world experience with them, having honed their skills through collaborative efforts across various disciplines and excelling in high-pressure work environments. By joining forces with such a group, you gain access to a wellspring of expertise and innovation that can significantly benefit your organization’s long-term success.
