The Luna Biolabs Project
A Modular AI-Driven Biolab for Personalized Medicine, Built on Open Hardware
What is your project about?
Luna Biolabs is a compact, modular biomedical laboratory system that allows researchers, students, and emergency responders to create personalized medications and vaccines on demand — safely, precisely, and intelligently. Built atop the open-source Voron 2.4 motion system, Luna integrates AI-driven decision-making, sensor-rich hardware modules, and a powerful dispensing and mixing platform called the Luna ADMS (Automated Dispense and Mixing System).
Designed by high school students, Luna combines professional-grade pharmaceutical functions with educational accessibility — aiming to bring life-saving tools to schools, field hospitals, and crisis zones where traditional biolabs are out of reach.
Why are we making it?
The inspiration for Luna came from a global problem: personalized medicine is the future of healthcare, but the tools to create it are either inaccessible or unaffordable. Traditional drug production is built for mass manufacturing — not for rapidly compounding individual doses based on a patient’s genetic profile or specific needs.
We wanted to change that.
That’s the promise of Luna: Democratizing advanced medicine by combining automation, AI, and open-source engineering.
How does it work?
Luna is a desktop sized lab system, designed around an aluminum extrusion frame inspired by the Voron 2.4 Project, offering mechanical rigidity, modularity, and affordability.
Inside the enclosure:
Modular Tool Docking System
Luna uses a smart Tool Dock to connect various laboratory modules:
Modules slide into hot-swappable bays with RFID auto-detection, enabling plug-and-play functionality.
Control System
Luna is powered by:
These two work together to coordinate precise lab operations via a layered architecture of real-time hardware control and high-level orchestration.
The Luna ADMS
Our Automated Dispense and Mixing System (ADMS) is Luna’s most critical tool, a high precision syringe motor module that delivers exact volumes of reagents. It’s essential for compounding medications, preparing diagnostics, or mixing vaccine formulations. The ADMS is designed to handle microfluidic volumes down to the microliter range.
Sterile Environment
The chamber is a miniature cleanroom:
This ensures FDA and ISO compliant pharmaceutical conditions, crucial for safe drug production.
AI Integration
Luna’s AI component uses:
These optimize each step of a formulation or experimental process in real time. Over time, Luna’s AI learns to improve results; reducing waste, speeding up reactions, and personalizing each treatment.
Real World Use Cases
Our Vision
Luna is more than a prototype. It’s our way of reimagining how medicine can be made, not just in labs, but in classrooms, clinics, and conflict zones. Our goal is to make personalized medicine accessible to anyone, anywhere.
By combining open-source hardware, AI-powered software, and intelligent automation, we hope to change the landscape of biotech forever, and give others the tools to do the same.
Mockups
Currently we are in the early stages of this project so we do not have any photos of Luna. We have some AI Generated Mockups along with a couple images from the Voron 2.4 Website so you can get an understanding of the general structure of Luna. Please keep in mind these are AI Generated and they are subject to change. Luna is a work in progress and we will be updating this pages as we make more progress.
